The move to learn

Db   Ab/F   Bbm   Gb  →  Bbm   Ab   Gb   Db

The verse starts at home on the 1 and walks 1, 3, 6, 4. The chord to notice is the 3: an F in the left hand with the Ab chord held in the right. That is the 5 chord sitting over the 3 in the bass, and it reads as Fm7. Your right hand does not move.

The verse ends on a 2-5, Ebm to Ab, and that is the door into the chorus. The chorus has a line that is not four even bars: Db for a full bar, then Ab for two beats and Bbm for two, then the Bbm holds three beats more and the Db lands on the last beat by itself. That single beat pushes you into the next line, which starts on the 4.

Too many black keys? Play it in C: the verse is C, G/E, Am, F, and the chorus runs C G Am F, then C, G-Am, Am-to-C, then F C G F. It won't match the recording, but the shape is the same, and the shape is the lesson.

Who wrote this. I started learning piano at thirty-five, because my pastor asked me to become the church musician. I play by ear, every Sunday at my church in St. Louis since March 2007. I write these songs, and then I chart them the way I would want to learn them.
