Better in Store

An original gospel song, words by Henry Q Allen. Here is the chord chart, free, with the numbers under every chord. The move inside it is one of the most useful in gospel piano, and it shows up in bar 4 of the verse.

Key of Fabout 59 beats a minuteone chord a bar

The chord chart for Better in Store in F. Verse, chorus, bridge and vamps in bars, with scale-degree numbers under each chord.
The regular-print chart, one page.

The move to learn

Cm7   F7   Bbmaj7

Bar 4 of the verse is the 2-5-1 to the 4. The song lives in F, and for one bar it borrows Bb as if Bb were home. Cm7 and F7 are the 2 and the 5 of Bb, so the ear leans into it and lands.

Then the verse walks back home to F. In C the same move is Gm7, C7, Fmaj7.

Listen for the vamp. It comes in after a walk down of three chords, Eb, Db, C. That is the flat 7, the flat 6 and the 5, and it is a big church sound. Try it by ear.

Who wrote this. I started learning piano at thirty-five, because my pastor asked me to become the church musician. I play by ear, every Sunday at my church in St. Louis since March 2007. I write these songs, and then I chart them the way I would want to learn them.
